Image note

Against a rose-pink mountain range, Los Angeles County unfolds as a theatrical pageant of landscape and costume. Palms and dark eucalyptus-like trees frame a broad green valley, while red-tiled, whitewashed buildings evoke the region’s mission heritage. In the foreground, musicians and a dancing couple wear fanciful Spanish and Mexican dress; their deep blues, russets, golds, and scarlets form a lively counterpoint to the cool distance. The repeated “LOS ANGELES COUNTY” lettering across the upper margin suggests a folded brochure cover or adjoining printed panels, its dignified serif type lending official authority to the romantic scene.

Issued by the Chambers of Commerce in Los Angeles County, this promotional brochure offered more than geographic information: it presented Southern California as a realm of sunshine, spectacle, romance, and seemingly effortless abundance. The imagery belongs to the tradition of early twentieth-century regional promotion that fashioned an appealing “Spanish” past for tourists, prospective residents, and investors. Mission forms, fiesta costumes, mountains, and luxuriant vegetation compress the county’s varied places and histories into one inviting panorama.

The unknown illustrator worked in a painterly commercial style, using flattened passages of strong color and decorative silhouettes to make the composition legible at brochure scale. Its idyllic vision leaves modern industry, congestion, labor, and the county’s diverse contemporary communities outside the frame. Yet as a historical object, it vividly records how civic boosters sold Los Angeles not simply as a destination, but as an attainable dream of beauty, leisure, and reinvention.
